The Art of Bonsai
Bonsai is an illusionary reflection of nature produced under controlled conditions.
NEW WORKSHOP... We will be doing private Introduction to Bonsai Workshops. A one on one workshop where we will first go through what to look for in choosing a pre-bonsai. We will then sit down and discuss styling options, from picking the front of the tree, to which branches to use, to creating an apex. We will then wire and style the tree. This will be a great workshop for not only the beginner but also those needing help in any aspect of styling a tree. The workshop will last 2-3 hours, cost will be $50.00, plus the price of tree.Wire and soil included. Pots are available if you chose to pot your tree.
NEXT BYOT... Is on September 4th. As usual Linda will have coffee and something delicious for the early birds, fruits and snacks for the munchies with soda, water and pizza for lunch if you want it. Pizza is $5.00 Some people pack a lunch. And who knows what delectable thing someone might bring for us. The cost is only $25.00 for the workshop including soil and wire. If you are more experienced and just want styling ideas or help with wiring or potting you can bring up to three trees. If you are a novice and want to learn how to create a bonsai we recommend you concentrate on just one tree, it takes awhile to completely style a tree. Newcomers are not yet capable of doing much of the hands on work themselves, and we like to take the time to explain what we are doing as we do it. This is not only good for them, but it helps even the more experienced learn more tips on wiring, styling and such. As people gain experience we want them to do more of the work themselves, then we will assist them in styling the tree. This is a workshop for you to learn how to, not for us to do all the work for you. Experience is the best teacher. Our desire is to help you learn the art of bonsai.
Pre-bonsai trees and all supplies will be available. Observers are welcome, so come spend the day or just a few hours. You can come anytime between the hours of 9:00-4:00. We have set up an area where we can take before and after pictures of the trees we work on. If you want we can e-mail your pictures.
AUGUST BYOT... The last two workshops we have been able to give the new pavillion a good trial, last month with the fans it helped keep us cool, this month we had a couple of storms, didn't bother us a bit, we all stayed safe and dry. The weather didn't seem to deter people much, we had a pretty good group. John and Rick brought in a couple of big Guavas that we were able to prune back and get them started on a style. We restyled a Bougainvillea, carved out a hollow trunk on an Elm, took what looked like an impossible Crape Mrytle and after some discussion and carving it is on it's way to becoming a nice tree. Did some pinching back and worked on the jin of a Juniper from a previous workshop and styled a really nice Azalea for Barbara. We potted Richard's Schefflera in it's new pot and finished styling it, man it looked sweet, probably going to have to be the tree of the day. Henning worked all day on his little trees in between taking pictures. Potted a neat little root over rock Serissa that the study group started. We had a couple people that didn't have the time to take the workshop, but stopped by for a little while just to see what was going on and say hey. We finished up right at wine time, it was a fun day and with all the material we got to work on I believe everyone learned a lot. Already looking forward to next months.
